"Is that really her hair?" someone whispered behind us as the lights dimmed at Alcazar Cabaret in Pattaya. There was this one act where they danced in traditional Thai dress—so detailed you could see gold thread shining under the stage lights—and then two minutes later they were doing Beyoncé. I didn’t expect that part at all.

I kept thinking about how much work must go into every costume change (seriously, how do they do it so fast?) and how everyone on stage looked like they were having actual fun—not just acting. At one point Li laughed when I tried to say "kabaret" in Thai—probably butchered it—and a couple next to us clapped along even though they didn’t know the words. The whole place felt weirdly welcoming, like nobody cared if you were a tourist or local or whatever. And then suddenly it was over and people were already lining up for selfies with the cast outside—I still think about that view from my seat sometimes.
