The experience

“You see that gold statue? Locals say it watches over us,” our guide said as we shuffled out of the minivan at the Big Buddha Temple. The air was thick with incense, and I could hear bells tinkling somewhere above the chatter. I’m not sure what I expected from a Koh Samui sightseeing tour, but standing barefoot on sun-warmed tiles, staring up at a 12-meter Buddha while monks drifted past in orange robes. It felt oddly grounding. The causeway to the temple was busier than I thought it’d be, everyone moving slow in the heat.

By the time we reached Na Muang Waterfall, sweat had glued my shirt to my back but jumping into that cold pool felt like waking up again. The water smelled of earth and moss. We drove past Bang Po Beach on the way back: quiet stretch of sand dotted with empty chairs and lazy dogs. It wasn’t part of any plan, just something we glimpsed out the window as afternoon faded.
