The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the sound — not trumpeting or anything dramatic, just this low, steady rumble from somewhere below the wooden boards. We’d barely stepped onto the Skywalk at Samui Elephant Kingdom when our guide, Nok, grinned and pointed down. “That’s Mali,” she said. I could see her big grey back brushing past the bamboo. It was humid, but there was a breeze up here, and the air smelled faintly sweet — maybe from all the fruit they feed the elephants? The whole place feels like it runs on patience. Even getting picked up at our hotel earlier felt easy — no stress or confusion — which is rare for me when traveling in Thailand.

We left after maybe two hours? Hard to say exactly because time sort of slowed down up there on the walkway. On the drive back toward Maenam Beach, I kept replaying that quiet moment above Mali in my head.
