Day 1 — ATV ride and Lampi Waterfall visit

I didn’t expect the mud to be that thick. We’d barely started our ATV ride outside Khao Lak when I realized my shoes were going to need a serious rinse. Our guide, Somchai, just grinned and waved us on — he seemed to know every bump in the trail by heart. The air smelled like wet leaves and something sweet I couldn’t place. Every now and then, we’d pass a patch of sunlight and it felt almost too bright after the shade.
After about an hour (honestly, I lost track), we stopped for fruit — tiny bananas and something green that Somchai called “santol.” He showed us how to eat it but I’m pretty sure I did it wrong. There was laughter anyway. My hands were still buzzing from the handlebars when we climbed back into the van for Thaimuang-Lampi National Park. The drive was quiet except for someone’s ringtone playing a Thai pop song in the front seat.
Lampi Waterfall is louder than you’d think — not roaring, but steady enough that you have to raise your voice a bit. The water was cold, almost shocking at first, but after the heat of the trail it felt perfect. Some people swam; I just sat on a rock with my feet in and watched sunlight flicker through the trees. There was this moment where everything went quiet except for the waterfall and I just…stayed there. Still think about that sometimes.
