The Experience

The day starts at Wat Huay Mongkol temple, a complex built around the world's largest monk statue—the image of Luang Phor Tuad, a holy figure revered across Thailand for 400 years. Small shops at the temple sell amulets and memorabilia if you want to browse before heading out. At 10:30 am the drive into Kaeng Krachan National Park begins, and this is when you watch the road for wild elephants crossing; the park stretches to the Burma border and holds Thailand's most intact rainforest.

Once you reach Pala U Waterfall, the walk into the jungle starts. The name comes from the Karen word for bamboo, and the area is thick with it. The waterfall has 15 cascades in total, each one different, and the staff recommend climbing to the 5th level—the path gets steeper above that and the footing becomes uncertain. You swim in the pools along the way. The rainforest here holds gibbons, hedgehogs, elephants and rare birds like red-headed trogons and great slaty woodpeckers, though spotting them depends on timing and luck. Lunch and bottled water are provided during the day.
