experience

What’s the experience like?

The morning air up at Doi Suthep feels cooler than down in the city—almost crisp, with a faint scent of incense drifting from the golden chedi. Our driver wound us up the mountain’s switchbacks, and I caught glimpses of Chiang Mai spreading out below through gaps in the trees. At the top, we climbed those famous naga steps (or you can take the tram if you’re not feeling it), and our guide shared stories about how this temple has watched over Chiang Mai for centuries. The bells chimed softly as monks passed by, and I found myself just standing there for a minute, soaking it all in.

Back in town, we made our way to Wat Chedi Luang. The chedi itself is massive—even after that old earthquake knocked it down a bit back in 1545. You can still see cracks along the bricks if you look closely. Our guide pointed out the city pillar tucked away inside; locals sometimes leave offerings there for good luck. There was a vendor selling coconut ice cream right outside—honestly, perfect on a hot day.

We finished at Wat Suan Dok, which sits quietly on the west side of old Chiang Mai. It’s less crowded here, and all those small white chedis almost glow against the afternoon sun. Turns out they hold remains of Chiang Mai’s royal family—something I’d never have known without our guide explaining it all. The grounds felt peaceful; even the city noise seemed to fade away for a bit.
