Chiang Mai: Doi Suthep Sunrise & Wat Pha Lat Small Group TourStart your morning in Chiang Mai with sunrise at Doi Suthep, peaceful moments at Wat Pha Lat, and forest tunnels at Wat Umong—includes pickup and entry fees.★ 4.77 (84)5hUS$ 29View › I didn’t expect the river to be so quiet at first—just a low hum of insects and the sound of our paddles dipping in and out. We’d left Chiang Mai early (the van was blissfully air-conditioned), and by the time we reached Chiang Dao Valley, the air felt thick with green. Our guide, Wit, handed me a paddle and grinned—he said something about “jungle tunnels” that made me laugh, but I wasn’t sure if he was joking or warning us.
The kayak felt solid, even though I was nervous—I’m not exactly an expert. But Wit gave us a quick briefing at the pro-shop (with Google Earth on a laptop, which honestly helped me picture where we were going). Once we slid onto the water, it was just us and this wild maze. Bamboo leaned over so close I had to duck more than once—got smacked in the face by a leaf at one point. The light kept shifting, patches of gold then deep shade. At one spot, Wit pointed out a kingfisher darting past—blue flash gone before I could even blink.
Lunch came as a surprise too—a riverside restaurant tucked between trees, smells of lemongrass and something smoky drifting over. There were vegan options (thank god), and everyone just sat around swapping stories about who got stuck on which branch. The support truck showed up with our dry bags like magic. Afterward, paddling felt easier—I think my arms finally figured out what they were supposed to do. It’s funny how quickly you start feeling part of it all.
