The Experience

Hotel pickup at 9 am gets you to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep first, the most important temple in Chiang Mai. Built in the mid-nineteenth Buddhist century, the temple sits on a hilltop and is marked by seven-headed serpent statues that line the stairs leading up to a Chiang Saen-style pagoda with Lanna design. From there, the view of Chiang Mai spreads out below. Your guide explains the temple's role in the annual Tiaw Khuen Doi Festival, when devotees walk up the hill to venerate the Buddhist relics kept inside.

The second stop is Wat Suan Dok, built in the late fourteenth century just outside the old city walls. The temple was originally created as a retreat on the grounds of a royal pleasure garden. It holds a central pagoda housing Buddha's relics, a garden of whitewashed tombs containing the remains of former Chiang Mai rulers, and a large outdoor assembly hall. The scale and arrangement of the site reflect its historical importance as a royal foundation.

Wat Jed Yod, the Temple of the Seven Spires, closes the morning. The seven stupas that crown an ancient assembly hall give the temple its name—they were built as an imitation of the Mahabodhi temple in Bodhgaya, India, where the Buddha achieved enlightenment. King Tilokkarat constructed it, and his remains rest in another tope within the complex. The structure blends architectural elements from Burma and China, and it was here that the eighth World Buddhist Council convened in 1477 to reform Buddhist doctrine. A modern assembly hall stands in front of the ancient building. By around 1 pm, you're back at your hotel.
