The Experience

The first tuk tuk we hopped into near Sukhumvit made this weird little electric whirring sound—so different from the old smoky ones I remembered from years ago. Our driver, Somchai, grinned at my surprise and pointed at the app on my phone like he was letting me in on a secret. No haggling, just a quick scan and off we went, weaving through traffic that felt like organized chaos (but somehow it works here). The city was already humming at 9am—street vendors fanning smoke over skewers, monks collecting alms barefoot along Rattanakosin’s edges. I kept catching whiffs of grilled pork mixed with exhaust and incense. It’s a lot but it’s Bangkok.

We jumped off by Wat Pho because I’d never actually seen the Reclining Buddha up close—turns out it’s even bigger than I imagined. There was this moment where the light hit all that gold leaf and everything else faded for a second. Afterward we wandered down to the pier and caught the Chao Phraya tourist boat (the pass covers both). Sitting on the open deck, wind in our faces, watching longtail boats dart past temples and glass towers… I didn’t expect to feel so calm in such a loud city. A local woman next to us pointed out Wat Arun as we floated by; she laughed when I tried to say its name in Thai—definitely butchered it.

Later we zipped over to Siam Square for iced coffee (needed it) and people-watching—the students there always look like they’re straight out of a fashion shoot. The app made it easy to bounce between neighborhoods without thinking too hard about logistics or fares. By late afternoon the sky turned that heavy blue-grey before rain, so we ducked into EmQuartier in Sukhumvit just as thunder started rolling in. Funny how you can go from ancient temples to air-conditioned malls in under an hour here. We ended up back at our hotel feeling both wired and weirdly peaceful—I still think about that golden Buddha sometimes when things get too noisy back home.
