experience

What’s the experience like?

The first morning kicked off early in Arusha with a quick breakfast and a last-minute gear check. Our guide, Joseph, made sure we had everything—he even double-checked our gaiters before we loaded into the van for Moshi. The drive out passed through Machame village; you could smell wood smoke and see kids waving as we rolled by. At the park gate, there was a bit of a wait while permits got sorted—plenty of time to adjust packs and chat with other trekkers from Germany and South Africa. Once on the trail, the rainforest closed in fast. It was humid, muddy in spots, and every so often you’d hear monkeys rustling overhead. Trekking poles were a lifesaver here. By late afternoon, we reached Machame Camp just as mist started rolling in—boots off, soup in hand, everyone grinning but tired.

The next day felt totally different—the forest thinned out fast and suddenly we were above the clouds. The path climbed up through heather and rocky ridges; I remember my boots crunching over loose stones and the wind picking up around midday. Shira Camp sits wide open on a plateau at 3,900 meters—cold at night but the sunset over those jagged peaks is something else. Our cook made hot tea with ginger to help with the altitude.

Day three was long but important for acclimatization. We pushed higher toward Lava Tower (locals call it “Shark’s Tooth”). It’s weird how your head feels light up there—Joseph kept reminding us to go slow (“pole pole,” as he said). After lunch near Lava Tower, we dropped down again to Barranco Camp at 4,000 meters—a relief for my legs. The air felt dry here; I woke up once to hear distant laughter from another group nearby.

The climb up Barranco Wall looked intimidating from camp but turned out kinda fun—hands-on scrambling in places, nothing too technical if you take your time. After that it was a gentle walk into Karanga Valley where porters had already set up tents by the time we arrived. Shorter day meant more time to rest and swap stories over dinner.

From Karanga to Barafu Camp was steady uphill across alpine desert—dusty underfoot and hardly any shade except behind big rocks. Mawenzi and Kibo peaks came into view just before camp; seeing them so close made summit night feel real all of a sudden. Everyone went quiet after dinner—early bedtime since wake-up was set for midnight.

Summit day started in total darkness at 2 AM—just headlamps bobbing along the zigzag path above Barafu. It’s tough going: cold wind biting your cheeks, steps getting slower as you gain altitude. Stella Point brought sunrise—a thin orange line over endless clouds—and then one more hour to Uhuru Peak itself (5,895 meters). I’ll never forget hugging my friends at the top or how quickly my water bottle froze solid on the way down! Descent back to Mweka Hut was rough on tired knees but spirits were high—last night on the mountain called for extra helpings of rice and beans.

The final stretch down through rainforest felt almost tropical again—muddy trails, birds calling out overhead, sun peeking through leaves now and then. At Mweka Gate they handed out summit certificates (a nice touch), then it was back to Arusha for showers and real beds at last.
