The experience

You start before dawn with pickup from your Arusha hotel, driving straight to Elephant lodge on the edge of Tarangire National Park. An armed ranger meets you there to lead a 3-hour walking safari on foot through the raw bush, tracking fresh animal footprints and examining baobab trees while wildlife is most active in the cool morning hours. This is not a vehicle-based game drive: you move through the landscape at eye level, reading the ground and the trees for signs of the animals around you.

After lunch at the lodge, you trade the vehicle for a mountain bike and head up the Great Rift Valley to Mto wa Mbu, a green farming settlement where rice and banana plantations line red-dust paths. You cycle through the farms and into the town center to explore the local food market, watching traders sell their produce. The afternoon is built around moving slowly enough to talk with small-scale farmers and see how the land is worked, then the air-conditioned vehicle carries you back to Arusha as the sun sets.

The tour runs 10 to 12 hours total and includes a packed lunch box, the mountain bikes, and a guide who speaks multiple languages. Pickup from Arusha is part of the booking, so you do not need a car or arrange your own transport to the lodge.

What is the walking safari at Elephant lodge actually like?

The walking safari is a 3-hour expedition on foot through the bush bordering Tarangire National Park, led by an armed ranger. You track fresh animal footprints, examine trees and landscape features, and observe wildlife at ground level during the cool morning hours when animals are most active. It is not a guided nature walk but a safari conducted on foot rather than from a vehicle.

How difficult is the cycling part of the day?

You cycle through Mto wa Mbu on mountain bikes along red-dust farm paths and into the town center. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, and the cycling is paced to allow time for interaction with local farmers and exploration of the community market rather than covering distance quickly.

What happens between the safari and the cycling?

After the 3-hour morning safari ends, you return to Elephant lodge for a hearty lunch. You then drive up the Great Rift Valley to Mto wa Mbu, where you pick up the mountain bikes and begin the afternoon cycling portion through the farms and markets.
