The experience
The National Museum opens the tour with a look at the fossil copy of Zinjanthropus from Olduvai Gorge and other archaeological finds that trace Tanzania's past through the Shirazi civilization of Kilwa, the Zanzibar slave trade, and the German and British colonial periods. From there the route moves to Kivukoni fish market, where fishermen deliver the catch throughout the day and the city comes to buy seafood at the lowest prices in town: a working market, not a staged one, where you see how the business actually moves.
The tour then passes the Askari Monument, a 1927 statue honoring African soldiers who fought in World War I, and moves to either Slipway or Mwenge for souvenir shopping. Slipway sits along the ocean with shops, restaurants and walkways. Mwenge is a community of local artist-owned shops selling wood carvings, jewelry, traditional bags and drums. Both let you bargain and support local makers directly. Depending on the time and traffic, you may also drive through Kariakoo, the local market that is the heartbeat of the city, or stop at the German-built church from the late 19th century.
The Village Museum is where the day often ends. You see traditional African huts from different Tanzanian tribes and get the historical background of each culture, then watch a traditional village dance and are invited to join in and learn the moves yourself. The whole route takes three to five hours depending on traffic, time of day and weather, and some stops may shift or be skipped to fit the day.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Askari Monument and why is it in Dar es Salaam?
The Askari Monument is a statue built in 1927 to honor African soldiers who fought in World War I on the allied side in Africa. It stands at a roundabout connecting Samora Avenue and Maktaba Street, replacing a German statue that the British removed when they arrived in 1916. You photograph it from inside the vehicle.
Can I walk through the Kariakoo market or just drive past it?
Kariakoo is a drive-through stop only. You do not walk through the market itself. The tour passes through so you see the sights, sounds and crowds of this local market, which is the heartbeat of Dar es Salaam, but the visit stays in the vehicle.
What happens at the Village Museum?
The Village Museum shows you traditional African huts from different Tanzanian tribes with the historical background of each culture. You then watch a traditional village dance and are welcome to join in and learn the dance moves yourself.
Will every stop on the itinerary be included in my tour?
Some stops may be changed, shortened or eliminated depending on weather, traffic and the time of day the tour runs. For example, Slipway can be replaced with Mwenge, Kariakoo may be skipped if time is tight, and the German church may be a drive-by rather than a stop. Your guide will adapt the route to fit the conditions.
What is included in the tour price?
The tour includes an air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water, all fees and taxes, and a live English-speaking guide. Hotel pickup is included. Lunch, breakfast, dinner and gratuities are not included.
