The experience

The tour starts with airport pickup in Arusha and a same-day game drive through Arusha National Park, where Mount Meru rises above grasslands dotted with giraffes, zebras, and colobus monkeys. From there, you move through Tarangire National Park on day two, famous for massive elephant herds and ancient baobab trees lining the river. Days three and four are devoted entirely to Serengeti: the first crossing through Ngorongoro Conservation Area to reach the park, then a full day hunting for predators and following migrating herds across the endless plains. The guide adjusts the route based on where animals are moving that season, so your sightings shift with the wildlife.

Day five brings a morning game drive before the return journey through the Ngorongoro highlands back to Karatu. The final day descends 610 meters into Ngorongoro Crater itself for a full-day drive inside the caldera, where the concentration of animals (lions, elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, leopards, hippos, flamingos) is among the highest in Africa. Picnic lunches are served in the field each day, and you overnight at lodges in Arusha and Karatu, with a campsite stay during the Serengeti portion.

A professional guide leads all game drives and handles navigation, wildlife identification, and logistics. The vehicle is built for safari, comfortable seating with good sightlines, and the guide speaks English or French. Children from age two are welcome, though the itinerary involves long driving days and rough terrain, so moderate fitness helps. Airport transfers are included, as are all meals throughout the six days.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (7 to 17 years); Child (4 to 6 years); Infant (2 to 3 years).

What animals might I actually see on a 6-day Tanzania safari?

Tarangire is known for large elephant herds, and Serengeti's plains support lions, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and hyenas. Ngorongoro Crater concentrates the Big Five (lions, elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, and leopards) along with hippos, flamingos, and jackals. Sightings depend on the season and where herds are moving, and your guide adjusts the route daily to find them.

How much driving is involved each day?

Days one, two, and five include morning or afternoon game drives plus travel between parks. Days three and four are full-day safari days in Serengeti with long stretches in the vehicle. The roads are unpaved in the parks, and the journey from Arusha to Serengeti crosses through the Ngorongoro highlands, so expect several hours of driving on most days.

Where do I sleep, and what are the accommodations like?

You stay at Runako Lodge in Arusha on night one, Jua Manyara Lodge on nights two and five, and a public campsite at Seronera in Serengeti on nights three and four. The lodges offer private rooms. The campsite is a shared facility. All accommodations are included in the tour price.

What is Ngorongoro Crater, and why is it worth a full day?

Ngorongoro Crater is a massive volcanic caldera approximately 610 meters deep that acts as a natural enclosure for wildlife. The high concentration of animals inside, including the Big Five, makes it one of Africa's most reliable places to see diverse species in a single day. You descend into the crater floor for game drives and picnic lunch near the hippo pool.
