The experience

You arrive at Zanzibar airport and a driver meets you for the transfer to your hotel. Day two is the centerpiece: a full-day blue safari that starts with a boat ride across turquoise water to a coral reef where you snorkel among fish, marine life and possibly sea turtles. The boat then takes you to a secluded sandbank for swimming and relaxation. Lunch is fresh seafood (grilled fish, shrimp and local specialties) served on the boat or beachside with tropical fruit. The afternoon might bring dolphin spotting, kayaking or simply time on deck before the sunset ride back to shore.

Day three begins after breakfast with a guided walk through a local spice farm, where you learn the history of clove, cinnamon and nutmeg cultivation and get to smell, taste and touch the spices as you move through the rows. Next is Prison Island, a historic site with old prison ruins and a sanctuary for giant tortoises. You can explore the island and swim or snorkel in the clear water around it. By midday you're back at the hotel after a guided walk through Stone Town's narrow alleys, markets and colonial buildings: a UNESCO World Heritage site with centuries of trade and culture layered into every corner.
