The experience
The day starts in Beitou with the Hot Spring Museum, a restored Japanese-era public bathhouse that tells the story of Taiwan's thermal heritage. From there you move to the Beitou Geothermal Valley, also called Hell Valley, where steam rises from emerald green water fed by natural hot springs. The contrast between the mineral-rich colors and the sulfurous mist makes the landscape feel otherworldly without needing invention.
Yangmingshan National Park takes up the middle stretch. You walk the Lengshuikeng Trail through areas where hot spring water streams run cool, then move to Xiaoyoukeng to see the volcanic activity up close: fumaroles venting steam, sulfur crystals, and boiling mud. The park also includes Qingtiangang Grassland, a wide-open grassy plain where cattle graze and the views stretch across the mountains. The whole Yangmingshan section runs roughly three and a half hours, giving you time to move at an unhurried pace between the different thermal and volcanic features.
The afternoon brings you to Fort San Domingo in Tamsui, a 17th-century Spanish fort with later Dutch and British occupation written into its walls and architecture. From there, Fisherman's Wharf offers views toward the coast and the Lover's Bridge, a white suspension bridge that lights up at night. You finish on Tamsui Old Street, a crowded pedestrian lane lined with traditional snack vendors, souvenir shops, and the street food Taipei is known for: iron eggs, fish ball soup, and other local specialties. Your guide travels with you throughout, assists with photos, and joins you for meals if you choose to eat along the way.

Can I walk the trails at Yangmingshan, or is it mostly a drive-through?
You walk the Lengshuikeng Trail, a relatively easy path through geothermal areas where hot spring water streams flow. You also stroll through Qingtiangang Grassland and visit Xiaoyoukeng to see fumaroles, sulfur crystals, and boiling mud up close.
