The experience
How much of Zurich can you actually see in a morning? This walk covers the whole city center, starting at the Main Train Station where the guide meets you in front of Tourist Information. From there you move into the heart of the city (Bahnhofstrasse, Rennweg, Augustinergasse), where the guide explains why Switzerland dominates watch production and walks you through the financial success that shaped the country. Photo stops are built into the route so you capture the city as you move through it.
The route itself is the history. You stand at Lindenhof, the spot where Zurich was founded around 2000 years ago, and the guide walks you through what that moment meant. St. Peter Church comes next, where Europe's biggest clock dial sits on the facade. Then Münsterhof and the Fraumünster church with its cloisters, before you reach Lake Zurich at Bellevue square, where you taste Swiss specialities: cheese, chocolate, a famous Swiss liqueur and a regional soft drink. The Grossmünster church, the icon of Zurich, anchors the right bank of the Limmat river, and the walk finishes in Niederdorf, the historical district where restaurants and bars line the streets. The guide shows you two secret places here and explains the Dada movement that started at Cabaret Voltaire. You end at Central Square, a short walk from where you started.
The guide speaks English throughout and offers suggestions at the end for how to spend the rest of your day in Zurich depending on what interests you. Children from age 6 are welcome. The walk is suitable for all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
