The experience

What makes this tour different is the guide himself: dressed in medieval style and carrying a traditional Swiss halberd, he sets the tone from the start with a fire horn and an invocation prayer. He walks you through the historic centre on a route that follows the Martini plan, the first city map of Lucerne from 1597, and points out which buildings still stand today. You'll see St. Peter's Chapel, dating to the 12th century, and learn where the phrase "stone rich" originated. The projector, iPad and postcards he carries show you what these streets and buildings looked like in the middle ages, so you're not just walking past them. You're seeing them as they were.

The tour moves through specific squares and alleyways, each with its own story. At the Chapel Bridge you learn why it's built diagonally across the river and see its interior paintings. The Water Tower, built in the late 13th century before the bridge itself, had a torture chamber and dungeon: the guide shows you pictures of the inside. You walk the Furrengasse and hear about the ghost and the Toggeli (an incubus known as the "love robber") that haunted it. At Kornmarkt, the Renaissance Town Hall has a clock without a minute hand, and you see the official measures of old Lucerne. The Brandgässli Alley leads to the story of the Riot of Lucerne, and the Weinmarkt shows old guest house signs and frescoes, including a Latin phrase on a former pharmacy: "There is no cure for a broken heart." At the riverside square called Zöpfli, projected paintings show the methods of prosecution and punishment used in medieval Lucerne. Near the end, you see the seven paintings of the Dance of Death projected onto a house wall, and pass the Jesuit Church, the first baroque building in Switzerland, built in 1677.

The tour ends where it began, at the Chapel Bridge. Winter tours (November through March) run 1 hour instead of the full 1.5 hours. Both the 19:00 and 21:00 departures follow the same route and stories. The later start means you'll walk the old town as it's lit at night. The guide speaks English or German, and the tour is private, so the pace and focus stay with your group.

Is this one for you?Book the 21:00 departure if you want to walk the narrow streets and squares when they're lit at night, which deepens the medieval atmosphere. The 19:00 start works better if you prefer to finish earlier or if you're traveling with children who tire before late evening.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and German.

What is the Chapel Bridge and why does the nightwatchman tour include it?

The Chapel Bridge is a covered wooden bridge built in 1365 that crosses the river at the heart of Lucerne. The tour includes it at both the start (where the fire horn sounds) and the end, and the guide explains why it's built diagonally across the water and shows you the paintings inside.

Will I see the Water Tower on this tour?

You won't enter the Water Tower, but the guide shows you projected pictures of its interior, including the torture chamber and dungeon. The Water Tower was built in the late 13th century, decades before the Chapel Bridge, and the guide explains its role in medieval Lucerne.

What does the guide wear and carry?

The guide is dressed in medieval style and carries a traditional Swiss halberd. He opens the tour with a fire horn and an invocation prayer, setting the medieval atmosphere from the start.

How does the guide show you what medieval Lucerne looked like?

He uses a projector to display images on buildings and house walls, an iPad for close-up details, and postcards of old Lucerne. He also shows you the Martini plan, the first city map from 1597, so you can see which medieval buildings are still standing today.

Is the tour different in winter?

Yes. From November through March, the tour runs 1 hour instead of 1.5 hours. The route and stories are the same. The shorter duration reflects the season.

Can I choose between the 19:00 and 21:00 departures?

Both departures follow the same route and stories. The 19:00 tour starts earlier in the evening, while the 21:00 tour walks the medieval streets later at night when the city is more dimly lit. You choose the time that suits your schedule at checkout.
