The experience

The day starts at the Montreux tourism office, where you board a bus for the drive into the mountains. The route climbs toward Col du Pillon and descends into Les Diablerets, a village of timber chalets built into the Alpine slopes. You'll have time to walk around the village and take in the scale of the landscape: the Glacier sits directly above at 3,000 meters, visible from almost anywhere in town. Lunch and the afternoon are yours to spend as you choose, exploring the chalets and the surrounding peaks.

If you've added the cable car option at checkout, you'll ride it up in about 20 minutes to reach Glacier 3000 itself. The cable car climbs steeply, and from the top you can see snow in every season. The view spans more than 200 peaks over 2,000 meters, including Mont-Blanc, Matterhorn and Jungfrau on clear days. A suspended bridge connects two peaks at the summit (it's one of only two such bridges in the world), and there's a fun park with a chairlift if you want to stay longer. Weather can close the cable car. If it does, you'll be offered an alternative date or a refund of the cable car portion.

The guide speaks English throughout and travels with the group. Children under 15 months cannot go to Glacier 3000 itself, though they can stay in the village. Strollers and prams work fine in Les Diablerets. The whole tour takes seven hours from start to finish.
