A cryptic message in a pizzeria, a hidden symbol in a record store—every object is a clue.

Sato Code is an escape game that unfolds across Lugano's city centre, starting at Piazza della Riforma and moving toward the Lido. You hunt for clues hidden in streets and shops, crack codes and solve puzzles that grow harder as you progress, using the Sato Code App on your phone as part of a team. The game takes roughly 90 minutes, requires at least two players with one smartphone each, and is designed for adults and teens aged 16 and up who enjoy the challenge of escape rooms.

The Experience

You start at Piazza della Riforma with a team of at least two people, each with a charged smartphone and the Sato Code App downloaded. The app gives different information to each player—you'll need to share what you find and piece together the clues together. As you move through Quartiere Maghetti, past Parco Ciani and Foce toward the Lido, you're hunting for a dozen clues planted in the old town: a cryptic message tucked into a pizzeria, hidden symbols in a record store, objects that only make sense when you connect them to the puzzle. This is not a walking tour narrating Lugano's history; it's a puzzle you solve by moving through the city.

The difficulty ramps up as you go. Early clues are straightforward enough to spot if you know where to look; later ones demand real brainpower to decode. You'll pass Lugano's well-known landmarks but also stumble onto corners most visitors miss—the game is designed to show you the city from an angle a guidebook never would. Internet connection is essential on every phone (use a hotspot if only one device has it), and comfortable shoes matter because you're walking the full route, not riding.

The game is available in English, Italian and German. You receive your tickets by SMS before you start. Minimum age is 16 for unaccompanied players, though families with younger teens who enjoy escape rooms can participate together. Wheelchair access is available, and public transportation options are nearby if you need them. The whole experience hinges on your team working together—one person alone cannot finish it.

Top questions

What exactly do I hunt for during the escape game across Lugano?

You search for a dozen clues hidden in the streets and shops of the old town—cryptic messages in restaurants, hidden symbols in shops, objects that form pieces of a larger puzzle. Each clue leads to a code or answer you need to crack to progress through the game.

Do I need a guide, or is this something my team does on our own?

This is a self-guided experience using the Sato Code App on your phone. There is no live guide walking with you; your team solves the puzzles independently using the app and the clues you find in the city.

How many people do I need to play, and what if I'm traveling alone?

You need at least two players, each with their own smartphone. The app gives different information to each person, so you must work together to solve it. If you're alone, you'll need to find another player to join you.

What's the route, and how much walking is involved?

The game starts at Piazza della Riforma and moves through Quartiere Maghetti, past Parco Ciani and Foce, heading toward the Lido di Lugano. The full experience takes roughly 90 minutes and covers the city centre on foot, so wear comfortable shoes.

Is this suitable for teenagers, or is it really only for adults?

The puzzles are designed for ages 16 and up. Younger teens can participate if they're traveling with adults and enjoy the challenge of escape rooms, but the difficulty is built for adult brainpower.

What happens if my phone runs out of battery or loses internet?

You need charged smartphones and active internet on every phone to play. If only one device has internet, you can use its hotspot to keep the others connected. Bring a power bank if you're concerned about battery life during the 90 minutes.
