The experience
The tour starts at the Bärengraben, the Bear Pit and Park where you'll look for the bears that gave Bern its name: legend says Duke Berchthold named the city after the first animal he killed on a hunting expedition. From there you cross the Untertorbrücke into the Matte quarter, then climb toward the Nydeggkirche, the Reformed church built on the spot where Bern was founded in 1191. The route then opens onto Münsterplatz, the square facing the Berner Münster cathedral, a Gothic structure built to symbolize the city's growing power and now a Cultural Property of National Significance.
The walk takes you past a sequence of Renaissance fountains restored in the 18th century but keeping their original character: the Zähringerbrunnen (with a bear in armor and cub), the Kindlifresserbrunnen (the "Child Eater Fountain" from folklore), and the Pfeiferbrunnen. The Zytglogge, a 13th-century gate tower that became the city's most recognizable symbol, sits a few steps away. It houses a 15th-century astronomical clock that performs a small dance every hour. You'll also see the Käfigturm, a medieval tower built around 1259 as a prison, and the Bärenplatz, the bear square created in the 16th century when the original bear pit was relocated. The tour ends at the Bundeshaus, Switzerland's Federal Palace and parliament, where sculptures on the façade depict the origins of the Swiss Confederation.
Your guide walks the route with your group only and can adjust stops as you go. The two-hour pace is steady but manageable. All areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessible. After the tour ends, your guide can point you toward the main street if you want to explore on your own.

Top questions
What is the Zytglogge and why does it matter in Bern?
The Zytglogge is a 13th-century tower built as the city's western gate that now houses a 15th-century astronomical clock: one of Bern's most recognizable symbols. The clock performs a small dance every hour, and the tower itself has served as a guard post, prison, and civic center over eight centuries.
Will I actually see bears at the Bear Pit?
The Bärengraben (Bear Pit and Park) is the first stop on the tour, and you'll have a chance to spot them, though sightings depend on the bears' activity that day. The bears are the symbol of both the city and the surrounding canton, and the pit sits next to the Nydeggbrücke overlooking the River Aar.
How tall is the Berner Münster cathedral?
The Berner Münster is 100.6 meters (330 feet) tall, making it Switzerland's tallest cathedral. It was built in the Gothic style as a symbol of Bern's growing power and is now a Cultural Property of National Significance.
Does the tour include entry to any of the buildings or attractions?
The tour is a walking route through the medieval city center and its squares, fountains, and landmarks. Entrance fees to attractions are not included. Your guide shows you the exteriors and explains the history of each site.
Can I customize the tour stops with my guide?
Yes, your guide can adjust the route on the spot based on your interests and pace. The tour is private to your group only, so there is flexibility to linger at sites that interest you most.
