The Experience

The tour departs from your Stockholm hotel or cruise ship in a comfortable car or minivan and heads north into the Swedish countryside, roughly 30 minutes to the first stop. You'll visit Broby Bro, a well-excavated Viking grave field where the guide explains how Vikings buried their dead and what they believed happened in the afterlife—including the story of Estrid, an aristocratic Viking woman from the Stockholm region. The landscape itself signals the shift backward in time as you move away from the city.

Next is Jarlabanke's rune stone bridge in Täby, where you'll learn about Jarlabanke, a powerful Viking lord and magnate, and the bridges and roads he built that connected Sweden and shaped the nation. You'll also visit a Viking parliament site where you can stand in the place where Viking men gathered to make decisions. The guide walks you through what these spaces meant and how they functioned in Viking society.

The tour ends in Sigtuna, founded in 970 AD by King Erik Segersäll. You'll walk the main street—which originated in the Viking Age—lined with 18th-century houses, and learn how this town fits into Swedish history. Transport back to Stockholm is included. Lunch is on your own during the tour.
