The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the way the light filtered through the trees — not harsh, but soft and greenish, like someone had put a filter over my eyes. We’d barely started on the Vermont Nature Trail when our guide, Fraser (who everyone seems to know in St Vincent), stopped us to listen. “Hear that?” he whispered. It took me a second before I caught it — this wild, echoing squawk from somewhere up in the canopy. He grinned and said it was the St Vincent parrot. I never thought I’d get excited about birdwatching, but there’s something about hearing your country’s national bird for real that makes you feel like you’re part of some secret club.

The trail itself is mostly shaded — which I was grateful for because even in light clothes, the humidity sticks to your skin like syrup. Fraser pointed out these tiny plants whose leaves curl up if you touch them (I tried it; they really do). At one point we found fresh tracks in the mud — he said maybe an agouti or mongoose had passed by earlier that morning. There were moments when all you could hear was our footsteps and birdsong, and then suddenly someone would laugh or ask a question about a weird-looking fruit hanging overhead. I think we all felt a bit like kids again.

Afterwards we stopped at Fort Charlotte for this wild view over Kingstown — honestly, my phone photos don’t do it justice. The wind up there smells salty and clean. Then Table Rock (where Fraser told us stories about old island legends) and finally Buccama Beach. By then my legs were tired in that good way, so sinking into the sand with a cup of rum punch felt like a reward. Someone handed around slices of mango that tasted sweeter than anything back home. I still think about that parrot call sometimes when things get too quiet.
