The experience

You descend into water so clear it barely feels like a barrier. The boat cuts through the Caribbean off St Maarten and drops anchor over a site that shifts depending on conditions: maybe the Proselyte, a merchant vessel that went down in 1801 and now hosts lobster, sponges, and reef fish in the wreckage. Or a reef dive where the coral structure rises like an apartment building for sea life. Either way, your guide stays close. Groups max out at 12 divers, which means you're not one of thirty people kicking toward the same coral head.

The dive itself runs two tanks back-to-back, so you're down for the better part of a morning. You'll see turtles if you're patient, sharks if you're lucky (they're not aggressive, they're just living there), and the smaller stuff: the sponges, the fans, the reef fish that dart and hover. If you've been diving regularly, this is a straightforward day. If your last dive was more than a year ago, the operation asks you to do a refresher first. They're not being cautious for show: Caribbean diving is warm and easy, but skill rust is real. Your certification card comes with you to check-in, and you arrive 30 minutes early so the guide can confirm your gear fit and your last dive date.
