experience

What’s the experience like?

Our driver greeted us right after breakfast, and before I’d even finished my tea we were winding through busy Colombo streets toward Kandy. The road got quieter as we left the city behind, passing little roadside stalls selling king coconuts and jackfruit. Our first stop was the Ayurvedic Herbal Spice Garden in Mawanella—walking between rows of cinnamon and cardamom plants, I caught a whiff of something earthy and sweet. One of the gardeners showed us how they grind sandalwood into paste for skin treatments; his hands smelled faintly of cloves.

By late morning, we reached the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. There was a gentle hum from worshippers moving through the white stone corridors, some carrying lotus flowers. Our guide explained why this temple is so important to Buddhists worldwide—he pointed out details in the carvings I’d never have noticed myself. The air inside felt cool compared to outside, and I remember hearing distant drumming echoing from a side hall.

Lunch came just as my stomach started rumbling—a rooftop spot overlooking Kandy Lake, where you could see tuk-tuks zipping below. The rice and curry tasted homemade, not too spicy but full of flavor. Afterward, we climbed up to Bahirawakanda Buddha Statue for a view over the whole city; it’s a steep walk but worth it for that wide sweep of green hills and tiled rooftops.

Later in the afternoon, we toured a tea factory in Kadugannawa. The scent inside was sharp—almost grassy—and I watched workers sort leaves by hand with practiced movements. Before heading back, we stopped at a gem museum where a local expert explained how Ceylon sapphires are cut and polished; he even let me hold a rough stone still dusted with earth from the mine.
