The experience
Two to three hours of climbing on iron rungs, ladders and bridges bolted into the cliffs above the Mediterranean: that is the Cala del Molí via ferrata near Sant Feliu de Guíxols on the Costa Brava. You are harnessed and roped throughout, moving along the rock face with the sea below and seagulls around you. The route is designed for beginners. No climbing background is required, only a normal level of fitness and comfort with heights. A qualified guide leads the way, checking your safety equipment and pacing the group through each section.
What makes this via ferrata singular is its location: built directly over the water, it is the only one of its kind in the world. The cliffs here are dramatic and the views constant. You are never far from the sound of waves or the sight of the coastline stretching away. The route mixes adrenaline with moments to take in the landscape, moving between exposed sections and more sheltered passages. Iron steps, ladders and bridges form the path. Certified safety material keeps you anchored to the rock at all times.
The guide is a qualified member of the AEGM (Spanish mountaineering association), speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French, and carries insurance covering both liability and accidents. Children from age 12 are welcome. You will receive a photo report of the climb. The activity runs all year, though weather can affect conditions. Public transportation serves the area, though you will need to arrange your own way to the meeting point at Cala Molí.
