The Experience

“Here, everyone stops to admire the light,” our guide Marta said, waving her hand at the Serranos Towers. She had this way of making you feel like you’d known her for ages. The morning was full of that soft Valencian sun, and I remember the uneven stones under my sneakers as we started down Calle Caballeros. There was a guy selling oranges from a crate nearby—he grinned at us when Marta explained how these towers once guarded the city gates. I tried to imagine Roman Valencia right there beneath my feet, but honestly got distracted by the smell of bread drifting over from somewhere close.

We wandered through squares where people actually lingered—like they weren’t in a rush to be anywhere else. At Plaza de la Virgen, an old man fed pigeons while Marta told us about the Basilica of the Virgen de Los Desamparados (I definitely butchered that name when I tried to repeat it—she laughed). The Cathedral loomed ahead, all three doors open wide, and she pointed out what was inside without dragging us in. The bell tower threw this long shadow across the plaza and for a second everything felt very still, even though there were kids chasing each other around us.

I didn’t expect to get so into the Central Market part of this walking tour of Valencia city center. It’s massive—8000 square meters or something wild like that—and smells like fruit and coffee and salt cod all at once. We didn’t go inside every place (it’s mostly outside), but just standing by those stalls made me hungry. Someone handed me a slice of jamón on a napkin (no idea who—maybe one of Marta’s friends?) and it was salty and perfect.

The last place we stopped was La Lonja de la Seda—the Silk Exchange—which has been here since 1996 as a World Heritage site. Gothic arches everywhere; you could almost hear echoes if you stood still enough. Marta told us how silk traders used to argue prices right where we were standing. I still think about that view through the columns toward the street outside—it felt both grand and ordinary at once.
