The Experience
We rolled out from the little office near the old riverbed, helmets slightly crooked and me still half-worried I’d tip over. Our guide, Marta, had this way of making you laugh at yourself — she called my first wobbly turn “the Valencian dance.” The air smelled faintly green, like cut grass after rain, even though it hadn’t rained in days. I didn’t expect the Segway to feel so smooth under my feet; it’s almost like floating but with a nervous edge (at least for the first ten minutes).
The Turia Gardens just open up in front of you — wide paths under orange trees, runners passing by with headphones, kids kicking footballs between patches of wildflowers. Marta pointed out a group of old men playing chess near a stone bridge; one waved at us and shouted something I didn’t catch. We zipped past fountains and these strange arches covered in vines. At one point, a flock of green parrots screeched overhead — apparently they’re locals too. The Royal Gardens felt quieter somehow, more tucked away, with statues peeking out from behind hedges and benches where couples sat sharing sandwiches.
I tried to pronounce “Jardí del Túria” properly and Marta just grinned — I probably butchered it but she said it was “charming.” There was this moment when we stopped under a huge tree (I think she called it an ombú?) and everything went kind of still except for the birds. I still think about that view sometimes — sunlight coming through the leaves, city sounds fading out for a minute. We took photos (they have this pro camera if you want), then headed back along the riverbed path, legs tingling from standing but not really wanting it to end yet.
