Step-by-step itinerary

Ebro Delta cruise and Peñíscola visit

  • Visit Ecomuseum and aquarium
  • Take guided Ebro Delta river cruise
  • Explore Peñíscola Castle
  • Free time in Peñíscola old town

The Experience

You leave Valencia early for a full day that moves between three distinct landscapes. The Ecomuseum comes first—a chance to learn how the delta formed, why it matters as a rice-growing region and a protected nature reserve, and which bird species show up at different times of year. An aquarium section shows the marine life the river supports before you head to the water itself.

The guided cruise takes you along the last few kilometers of the Ebro, Spain's second-longest river, to the point where it empties into the Mediterranean. Live commentary in Spanish and Catalan is translated to English by your coordinator as you watch for flamingos and other birdlife along the banks and on the water. The river route reaches areas of the delta that are not accessible by land, so the perspective shifts from what you saw at the museum.

Peñíscola's medieval castle dominates the old town from a rocky peninsula. Entry is included, and the castle itself—one of the best preserved in the Valencia region—dates to the 13th century and holds the story of Papa Luna, the Antipope. From the ramparts you see across the old town, the new town, the beaches and the coast. The Artillery Park, a former weapons and gunpowder storage now open as a museum, is also included. After the guided portion, you have free time to wander the whitewashed streets of the old town, eat lunch at one of the restaurants, or walk the seafront promenade. Peñíscola has been a filming location for Game of Thrones and other productions, and the atmosphere reflects that history.
