Toledo Underground Tour: Roman Baths & Hidden History
Underground Roman, Muslim, and medieval baths and wells tour with historical insights
An underground tour of Toledo takes you through five historical sites beneath the city streets—Roman Baths, Horse Baths, Saviour's Well, the Jew's House and a domed medieval basement—with an accredited Spanish-language guide and entry tickets included. The tour runs two hours and suits all fitness levels; audio equipment is provided for groups over six people, and children's audio is available from age twelve.
Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Toledo Underground historical sites
- Visit Horse Baths
- See medieval social and religious site
- Tour House of the Jew
- Explore domed basement near Trinidad Street
- Discover Roman engineering at Roman Baths
The Experience
The tour starts at ground level but the real route is below. You descend into the Horse Baths, a 12th-century Islamic hydraulic complex that still shows how water moved through the medieval city. From there you move through a basement listed as a Property of Cultural Interest—a space that held the social, hygienic and religious life of Toledo's Middle Ages. The Jew's House comes next, a 14th- or 15th-century Mudéjar building with a basement that may have served as a ritual bath. A domed chamber from the 12th or 13th centuries sits parallel to Trinidad Street, connected to a water tank that fed the systems above. The Roman Baths close the sequence, and they show a different engineering logic altogether—how the Romans used water for both utility and leisure, with the scale and precision that made them great builders.
An accredited guide leads the whole route in Spanish, so the history is explained as you stand in front of it rather than read from a placard. The two-hour pace means you move through each site without rushing, and the guide can answer questions about what you're seeing. Tickets to all five monuments are included, so there's no separate entry fee at each stop. For groups larger than six people, audio equipment is supplied; if you're bringing children twelve or older, they get their own audio track so they can follow along at their own level.
What’s included
- Entry to all five underground sites (Roman Baths, Horse Baths, Saviour's Well, Jew's House and the domed medieval basement).
- accredited Spanish-language guide for the full two-hour route.

Is this one for you?The shared tour with a guide suits anyone who wants the history explained as they walk through each space rather than figuring it out alone—the guide connects what you're seeing to Toledo's Muslim, Jewish and Roman past, and the fixed route means you don't have to decide which basement or bath to visit next.

What exactly are the Horse Baths and why are they important to Toledo's history?
The Horse Baths—officially the Caballel Islamic Bath—are one of the most thoroughly studied water systems in Toledo, built during the Islamic period to serve the city's medieval population. They show how sophisticated hydraulic engineering was in the 12th century and what daily life looked like for people who used communal bathing spaces.
Will I be able to walk through all five underground sites, or is it mostly viewing from a distance?
You descend into and walk through the sites themselves—the Roman Baths, the Horse Baths, the Jew's House basement, the domed medieval chamber and the Saviour's Well. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, and infants or small children can be brought in a pram or stroller if needed.
Is the guide's explanation in English, or only Spanish?
The accredited guide leads the tour in Spanish. If you need the tour in another language, you'll want to confirm availability before booking.
How long does the whole tour take, and what time does it start?
The tour runs two hours total. Specific start times aren't listed here—you'll see the available departure times when you select your date at checkout.
What's included in the ticket price, and what costs extra?
Entry tickets to all five monuments and the accredited guide are included. Audio equipment is provided for groups over six people at no extra charge; children's audio is available from age twelve.
