The experience

The Plaza Mayor is the centerpiece: one of Europe's most beautiful squares and the reason Salamanca earned UNESCO status. The tour builds outward from there, moving through the old city's tightly packed streets to show you the 16th-century Cathedral with its golden sandstone, the 12th-century Cathedral still in active use, and the university patio with its carved sandstone facade in plateresque style. You'll also pass the 16th-century Palace, the House of the Shells (a 15th-century mansion now a public library), and La Clerecía, the Jesuit church that dominates the skyline.

The route follows the river banks on the way out and loops back through the center, staying flat or downhill for most of the ride: only one climb at the very end. Salamanca's compact size makes it easy to cover on a bike, and the guide points out the Roman bridge from the first century and explains how each landmark connects to the city's history. The whole loop takes two hours, including time to rest at a viewpoint square where street musicians often play.

Groups run small, so if fewer than four people book, the tour can be cancelled. You'll need at least moderate fitness and a minimum height of 1.50 meters to ride. Specialized seats are available for children up to four years or 20 kilograms. The guide is live and speaks your choice of English, Spanish, German or Dutch.

What’s included
