The Experience
I’ll admit, I almost missed the bus—my coffee took forever that morning in Málaga. But our guide Carmen just grinned and waved me over, like she’d seen this before. The drive out through the Andalusian hills was quieter than I expected; everyone sort of dozed off as we passed these white villages—Ardales, Cuevas del Becerro—just blinking in the sun. When we rolled into Setenil de las Bodegas, it felt like someone had pressed pause on time. The rock overhangs above the streets are so low you almost duck instinctively. I tried to order a café solo at a bar tucked under the cliff and completely botched my Spanish—the bartender just smiled and handed me something anyway.
We had about an hour to wander those cave streets—Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra. There’s this spot with a “Kiss me in this corner” sign that made us all laugh (I did not kiss anyone, for the record). The air smelled faintly damp from the rocks but then sharp with frying oil from somewhere nearby. After that, it was back on the bus for the short hop to Ronda—only 17 km but it feels like another world. Carmen led us through Alameda del Tajo park where old men played cards under the trees, then out onto Puente Nuevo. That gorge is deeper than photos ever show; I got a little dizzy looking down.
The tour included entrance to Don Bosco House—honestly, I didn’t expect much but there’s this terrace overlooking the whole valley that kind of stopped me mid-sentence. We tried yemas del Tajo (these sticky little egg yolk sweets) with a glass of local wine that tasted almost like honey. Carmen told us how they make both by hand here—she even knew one of the bakers’ families. Afterward we had free time to grab lunch; I sat outside with a plate of jamón and just watched people drift by in no particular hurry.
I still think about that view from Ronda when I’m stuck in traffic at home. The ride back was quiet again—just sunburned faces and that sleepy feeling you get after eating too much sugar and walking all day. So yeah, if you’re wondering whether a day trip to Ronda and Setenil from Málaga is worth it… well, I’d go again just for another bite of those yemas.
