The experience
You start the morning at your hotel with pickup included, then head into Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa to visit two wineries before lunch. Each winery shows a different side of the region (some are modern facilities, others have historic underground cellars), so you taste wines that reflect the diversity of what Rioja produces. Your guide, a native English and Spanish speaker trained as a Wine Scholar, walks you through what you're tasting and why each winery does things its own way.
Around midday you stop in a small Rioja village for pintxos, local small plates served with wine, where you eat what locals eat and sit in the atmosphere that shapes the region's food culture. After lunch, you visit a third winery for a final tasting before heading back to your accommodation. The whole day runs eight hours, and the group caps at eight people, so the pace stays relaxed and you're not herded through.
The wineries are chosen based on what you already know about wine and what you want to see, so whether you're deep into Rioja or just curious, the stops fit where you are. Tastings and winery entries are included. You bring an appetite for the pintxos and an open mind about what you'll taste.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
What's the difference between the wineries I'll visit?
The three wineries are selected to show the range of Rioja: some operate as modern facilities with contemporary production, while others feature historic underground cellars where wine has aged for decades. Your guide picks them based on your wine knowledge and preferences, so the visits match what you want to learn.
Is this tour suitable if I've never been to Rioja before?
Yes. The tour is designed for both keen wine lovers and people simply curious to discover Rioja. Your guide brings the wines, wineries and region to life regardless of your background, and the mix of tastings, village lunch and cellar visits gives you a real sense of how the region works.
What happens during the pintxos lunch?
You stop in a charming Rioja village where you eat traditional small plates and soak up the local atmosphere. The pintxos are paired with wine, so you experience how the region's food and wine culture actually fit together, not as a separate lesson but as the way people there eat and drink.
How much time do I spend at each winery?
Each winery includes a visit and tasting, but the exact time depends on the winery and what's happening that day. With eight people maximum and a guide who knows the region, the pace stays comfortable and you're not rushed through any stop.
Do I need wine knowledge to enjoy this?
No. The tour welcomes anyone from curious beginners to experienced tasters. Your guide adjusts explanations to the group, and the three contrasting wineries, modern to historic, give you enough variety that you'll find something that clicks regardless of your starting point.
