You rappel twice and jump into pools so clear you see the bottom.

Río Verde canyoning is a guided activity in Parque Natural de las Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama where you walk, swim, slide, jump and rappel through a canyon river for about 4 hours. The route includes 6–7 jumps of up to 9 meters and two mandatory rappels of 6 and 9 meters, designed for families and beginners with moderate fitness. Park entry and all safety equipment are included. Your guide is a certified professional who leads in English or Spanish. You choose between a private tour with your own van or an open group departure.

The experience

The canyon itself is the draw: turquoise water, limestone walls, and a sequence of natural pools separated by short hikes and water crossings. You start with a 45-minute hike from the parking area to the canyon entrance, already geared up in a wetsuit and harness. Once you reach the river, the 4.5-hour descent is a mix of walking along the streambed, swimming across deeper sections, sliding down natural rock chutes, and jumping into pools. The jumps range from small drops into waist-deep water to the full 9-meter plunges into the clearest pools: each one optional, though most people do them. The two rappels are fixed points where you clip into a rope and lower yourself down vertical sections. Your guide sets the pace and watches every person.

The guide handles all the technical setup and safety checks before you start. You wear a helmet, harness, and neoprene booties. The guide carries the ropes and rigging. The route is graded moderate, which means it suits families and people new to canyoning, but it does demand a steady pace and comfort in water. You'll be in and out of the river for hours, so the physical fitness requirement is real, not extreme, but genuine. The park access fee is built into the price, and the van ride to and from the trailhead is included. If you book a private tour, the van is yours alone, and if you choose the open group, you share it with other participants.

The day ends near the van, where you rinse off and change out of your gear. Your guide drives you back to the original meeting point. Bring a towel and a change of clothes. The operator does not provide snacks or bottled water, so pack what you'll need for the afternoon.

Is this one for you?Choose the private tour if your group wants to move at its own pace and avoid sharing the van. Pick the open group to meet other canyoners and split the cost. Either way, you need moderate fitness and comfort in water. This is a full afternoon of hiking, swimming and climbing, not a casual float.

How many jumps are in the Río Verde canyon?

What's the difference between the private tour and the open group?

The private tour gives you a dedicated van and guide for your group alone. The open group shares the van and guide with other participants. Both include the same canyon route, equipment, and park entry.
