The experience

Your private driver and official guide meet you at the cruise port or hotel and stay with you for the full 4 hours. The Roman Theatre, built between 5 and 1 BC, once seated about 7,000 spectators and was excavated almost entirely from the rock: one of the largest in Roman Hispania. The museum, designed by architect Rafael Moneo, lets you walk inside the monument itself. A panoramic elevator takes you up to Torres park for an exterior view of the castle of the Conception, a medieval structure built on earlier Roman and Arab foundations. The Arab-period lantern still stands and once served as a lighthouse.

The Punic Wall is one of the few Carthaginian remains found in Spain, marking the legendary city of Qart Hadast founded by General Asdrubal in 229 BC. Next to it stands the burial crypt of the hermitage of San Jose, built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with walls decorated in a peculiar pictorial program called the Dances of Death. The tour also covers the Roman forum, partially excavated beneath San Francisco square, where archaeologists have found temples dedicated to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, the augusteum, the curia and baths from the low imperial period. The Consistorial Palace, built between 1900 and 1907, is the city's main modernist landmark: a triangular building with a white marble façade and zinc domes, decorated with the city's emblems.

The guide speaks English or Spanish and can adjust the pace to your interests. If you want to visit the Naval Museum or the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology (which holds the Odyssey treasure, over 570,000 gold and silver coins from the frigate Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes), those entrance fees are separate and optional. Public transportation is available nearby if you prefer to explore on your own between stops.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What's inside the Roman Theatre Museum?

The Roman Theatre Museum, designed by Rafael Moneo, takes you inside the monument itself as its final great hall. The theatre was built between 5 and 1 BC with a capacity of about 7,000 spectators and was excavated almost entirely from the rock, making it one of the largest in Roman Hispania.

Can I visit the Naval Museum or the underwater archaeology museum?

Both the Naval Museum and the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology (ARQUA) are optional add-ons with separate entrance fees. Your guide can arrange visits if you want to include them in your 4 hours, though this will reduce time at other sites.

Does the tour include the Punic Wall?

Yes, the Punic Wall is a main stop. It marks one of the most important episodes in Mediterranean history (the Punic Wars between the Carthaginians and the Romans), and is one of the few Carthaginian remains found in Spain. Next to it stands the burial crypt of the hermitage of San Jose with its Dances of Death pictorial program.

What happens if my ship arrives late or I need to leave early?

The tour is private and timed to your schedule. If your cruise has a tight turnaround, let the operator know at booking so the guide can adjust which sites to prioritize within the 4 hours.

Is the castle viewpoint included?

Yes, a panoramic elevator takes you up to Torres park for an exterior view of the castle of the Conception, a medieval structure built on earlier Roman and Arab foundations. The Arab-period lantern, which once served as a lighthouse, is still standing.
