The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the dust—fine, chalky, sticking to my teeth. We’d just pulled off the main road near Mijas Pueblo, and suddenly it was all engine growl and the smell of hot rubber. Our guide Miguel grinned as he handed us goggles and these bandanas (I thought they were just for photos, but no—totally necessary). I could hear cicadas somewhere in the dry grass. We picked the two-hour buggy tour, but even after ten minutes I was already thinking I should’ve gone for three.

We rattled along dirt tracks that twisted between olive trees and then dipped into what used to be a riverbed—just pebbles now, with a weird coolness coming up from the stones. At one point we stopped by a bamboo patch; Miguel told us locals use it for fishing rods. He tried to show me how to say “caña” properly in Spanish—I mangled it and he just laughed. The air tasted kind of sweet there, like dry grass mixed with something almost metallic from the old talc quarry nearby. The whole Costa del Sol looked different from this angle—less polished, more raw.

There’s this one viewpoint where everything goes quiet except for wind and your own breath. You can see all the way down to Fuengirola if you squint past the haze. I didn’t expect to feel small up there—it’s not a huge mountain or anything—but something about being covered in dust with your heart still thumping from the drive makes you notice things differently. We drank cold water (included) while Miguel pointed out trails only locals know about. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
