The experience
You start from Poris de Candelaria, where ancient fishermen's houses sit tucked under a massive cave by the ocean. After a brief safety briefing on kayak handling, you push off and begin skirting the volcanic cliffs of Tijarafe's coast. The water is calm, and the contrast between the dark rock and the sky shifting through golden, orange and red tones as the sun falls toward the Atlantic is what makes this moment different from a daytime paddle. The light itself becomes part of the route.
The destination is Cueva Bonita, a sea cave that exists in a particular kind of light only at sunset. As you approach, the sun enters from the ocean side and fills the interior with orange and red reflections that bounce off the volcanic walls and the water below. The darkness of the cliffs, the sound of the sea, and the changing sky frame what the operator calls one of the most magical moments in La Palma. The paddle back follows the same coast as the light continues to fade.
