The Experience
“You’ll probably get wet,” our guide joked as we fumbled with life jackets on es Figueral beach. The sun was already warming the sand but there was this salty breeze that made me hesitate before stepping into the kayak. I could hear kids laughing behind us, someone’s dog barking at the waves. Once we’d pushed off, it felt quieter — just the sound of paddles dipping and that weird squeak mine kept making (I swear it wasn’t me). Our guide, Marta, pointed out these massive red cliffs and explained how the green clay streaks meant something about the island’s geology — I didn’t catch all of it but she seemed to know every rock by name.
We hugged the coastline through the Tagomago Marine Reserve, past a tiny fisherman’s hut called racó de s’Aubadar. The water was so clear I could see my paddle shadow flickering over pebbles way below. There was a moment when we drifted into one of those sea caves — just a cool pocket of shade, echoey and blue-green inside. Someone tried to sing (badly), which made everyone laugh except Marta who just grinned and said “acoustics are better outside.” We stopped at this sandy patch you can only reach by sea; honestly, I still think about that stretch of silence after we jumped in for snorkeling — just bubbles and sunlight slicing through water. My mask kept fogging up but I managed to spot a couple of silvery fish darting around.
I didn’t expect snacks to taste so good after paddling — fruit and dried nuts never felt fancy until you’re sitting on a rock in your swimsuit, hair full of salt. On the way back past Punta des Llaut (apparently some Roman channel?), Marta told us stories about local fishermen getting caught in sudden storms here. We finished up near Pou des Lleó, arms tired but kind of happy-tired, then did some stretches on the sand while someone’s speaker played old Spanish pop songs. It all felt pretty relaxed — not rushed or showy. And yeah, I’d do it again just for that feeling when you first slide out onto open water.
