The experience

The balloon launches 500 meters from the Royal Palace, between the Prince's and Island gardens, so you start above one of Spain's most formally designed towns. From the air you see the symmetrical streets, Plaza de Parejas, Plaza de San Antonio and the ornate Railway Station laid out below, then drift across the Tajo and Jarana plains. The flight lasts about an hour, and during it the pilot takes you to different altitudes so the landscape shifts: monuments and wildlife come into focus, then recede into the broader patchwork of fields and water.

Once the balloon touches down, passengers join a traditional landing ceremony. Then comes the brunch: toast with cava, Iberian sausages, cheese, bread, water and soft drinks. The whole ground portion is unhurried, built around the ritual and the meal rather than a schedule.
