The Experience
I’d wanted to see the Alhambra for years, but honestly, I was nervous it’d feel like just another crowded monument. It wasn’t. The morning air in Granada still had that cool bite as we met our guide near the entrance—her name was Carmen, and she had this way of telling stories that made you lean in. She handed out little radios (which I kept fiddling with), so even when we drifted apart in the Nasrid Palaces, you could still catch her voice echoing through those tiled halls.
The Nasrid Palaces were quieter than I expected. Light spilled across the mosaics and there was this faint smell of orange blossom from somewhere—I never figured out where. Carmen pointed at a ceiling covered in honeycomb shapes and asked us to guess how many pieces there were (I gave up after 20). She joked about how sultans would have hated Instagram. I liked that she didn’t rush us; sometimes we just stood there, listening to water running somewhere behind the walls.
We wandered up to the Alcazaba after that—lots of uneven stones underfoot and views over Granada that made me stop talking for a minute. Some people took photos; I just watched the city wake up below. The wind picked up on the tower, so my hair went everywhere (there’s probably a photo of me looking ridiculous). Then it was down through the Generalife gardens—roses, fountains, someone playing guitar nearby. Carmen gave us tips for tapas spots back in town before we left. I still think about that hush inside the palace rooms; it felt like stepping sideways in time or something.
