A morning in the water, structured instruction, and the same instructor throughout

Small-group surf lessons in Playa del Inglés, Gran Canaria teach you to catch waves with real progression, not just a single session. You meet at the surf school at the foot of the Maspalomas dunes around 9:30, watch a video theory class built on 10+ years of teaching experience, do a beach simulation, then paddle out for two separate 50-minute sessions with a break between them. Groups stay at maximum 5 students per instructor, so the day adapts to your level whether you're starting out or already have experience. All photos are included and free to download.

The Experience

What makes the difference between a surf lesson that sticks and one you forget? The same instructor all day, small enough groups that they actually watch you, and a structure that builds instead of just filling time. You start with a video theory class that covers the fundamentals that actually help you get up on the board — not generic talking points, but the result of over a decade of hands-on teaching. Then a short beach simulation on dry land means nothing feels rushed once you're in the water. That's before you even paddle out.

The first session runs about 50 minutes in the water with your instructor watching your form and adjusting what you're doing. You come back in, rest for 20 minutes, drink water, eat fruit, and recharge. Then you go back out for a second session where you build on what just clicked. Two separate stints in the water let you absorb what you learned instead of getting tired and sloppy in a single long push. The local beach break at Playa del Inglés offers good waves for learning when conditions are right, and your instructor knows the daily conditions before you arrive — that's why the exact start time depends on the swell, not a fixed clock.

You finish back at the surf school with a relaxed photo viewing where you see yourself in action. All the photos are included and free to download — no upselling, no surprise charges. The school sits directly at the foot of the Maspalomas dunes, as close to the beach as it gets, and the whole day runs about four hours from start to finish. Surfboards, wetsuits, rash vests, leashes and fins are all provided; you bring a moderate level of fitness and the willingness to get wet.

Is this one for you? You're learning to surf for the first time or building on experience you already have, and you want the same instructor watching your form all day instead of rotating through different teachers. Small groups and a structured day — theory, simulation, two separate water sessions, a break between them — mean you progress instead of just paddle out and hope.

Top questions

What's the difference between the two surf sessions in the same lesson?

The first session is about 50 minutes in the water where your instructor watches your form and helps you find your balance on the board. You come back in, rest and eat fruit for 20 minutes, then paddle out again for a second session where you apply what just clicked and build real progression instead of just getting tired in one long push.

Do I need to have surfed before to book this lesson?

No. The video theory class and beach simulation work equally well for first-time surfers and those who have surfed before, and your instructor adapts the whole day to your level and goals. Children are welcome from age 8.

What happens to the photos taken during the lesson?

All photos are included in the lesson and free to download — you get to see yourself in action during a relaxed photo viewing at the end of the day, with no extra charges or upselling.

How many people will be in my group?

Groups stay at maximum 5 students per instructor, which means your instructor can actually watch your form and adapt the session to what you need instead of managing a crowd.

What's included in the lesson, and what do I need to bring?

The lesson includes surfboard, wetsuit, rash vest, leash, fins, bottled water, fruit, photos, and an air-conditioned vehicle. You need to bring a moderate level of physical fitness and a willingness to get in the water; the school is located near public transportation options if you need them.

What time does the lesson start?

You usually meet at the surf school around 9:30 in the morning, though the exact timing depends on the daily surf conditions so the waves are right for learning when you paddle out.
