The Experience

I’ll admit it — I wasn’t sure about the whole Segway thing at first. We met our guide (Javier, super patient) right outside our hotel in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and he just grinned when I confessed I’d never even touched one before. The instructions were quick — honestly, after five minutes wobbling back and forth, I was rolling along like I’d done it for years. My partner kept teasing me about my “Segway face” (apparently I look very focused), but you get used to it fast.

The air near Maspalomas was warm but not sticky, kind of salty from the ocean but with this sweet note from all the flowers around. We zipped past palm trees and could hear birds (our guide pointed out papagayos — green flashes darting between branches). Later we rolled down to the breakwater by the lighthouse — that spot where you can see almost all of Gran Canaria’s south coast curving away. We paused for water (which hit the spot; bring sunscreen, trust me) and swapped stories about past trips with Javier. He told us how locals used to cross these dunes on foot before tourism changed everything. That stuck with me more than I expected. Heading back, my legs felt wobbly but in a good way — like after a hike but easier on the knees.
