The experience

Ever wondered what it feels like to paddle right up to a cave in the side of a cliff? That’s how our day started in Playa de Taurito, Gran Canaria. The beach was still pretty empty when we met our guide. He smiled and handed out bright yellow kayaks, told us not to worry if we’d never tried before. “Just follow me,” he said. I could smell sunscreen and salt everywhere. The first few strokes felt wobbly but after five minutes, I sort of forgot I was even paddling.

The cliffs looked almost white against the blue water: our guide explained something about volcanic layers but honestly, I was too busy watching little crabs scuttle over the rocks. We drifted inside one of the caves (it echoed when someone laughed), and for a second it was just dark and cool except for that weird mineral smell you get near old stone. At one point, he offered us the chance to jump off a low ledge into the sea. Some people did it with no hesitation. I needed a minute, but ended up doing it anyway: my heart was racing but it felt so good.

Afterwards we landed on this tiny beach you can only reach by water. There were shells everywhere and no crowds at all. Just us, some seagulls, and the sound of waves smacking the shore. Our guide passed around snacks while we tried paddle boarding (I fell off twice) and then gave us snorkels to poke around the rocks. Water was chilly at first but clear enough to see little fish darting by. I still think about that cave echo sometimes. It’s stuck with me more than any postcard view ever could.
