The experience

“You’ll fall at least ten times,” our instructor grinned as he handed me the wetsuit. I’d barely zipped it up before the wind sent a salty spray across the sand: Famara’s kind of famous for that breeze, apparently. The surf shop was buzzing with people from all over (I heard at least three languages in five minutes), but somehow it felt like everyone was on the same team. We piled into a van for the quick ride to Playa Famara, boards stacked on top, someone humming something Spanish I couldn’t place.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much during the warm-up: stretching on sand while trying not to look too ridiculous next to kids half my age. Our guide, Marta, showed us how to spot rips and paddle out without getting totally wiped out. She had this way of making you feel like messing up was just part of it. “Everyone eats sand their first day,” she said, which made me feel better when I face-planted right after my first try. The Atlantic tasted colder than I thought it would.
