The experience
Costa Quebrada is a geological textbook written in stone and water. The tour follows the coast for 8 kilometers, moving through a landscape shaped by millennia of erosion: hanging valleys, tombolo formations, fossil beds and the abrasion platforms that make this stretch of Cantabria's shore unmistakable. You'll start at Covachos Beach, where the guide explains how the coast formed and what the "Colioris" effect means for the beaches here, then move through La Cubeta to the Pedrondo and Baselga basins before reaching El Portío inlet with its islets and facing beaches. The walk ends at Somocuevas, where a tombolo (the natural bridge between an islet and the mainland) completes the day's geology lesson.
The tour takes three hours and demands comfortable closed shoes (sneakers or trekking boots work) and long pants to protect against the coastal vegetation. Bring water. There are no shops along the route. An official guide walks with your group the entire way, pointing out El Castro island, explaining what an abrasion platform actually is, and naming the flora and fauna you pass. The guide speaks English, Spanish or Italian. Your choice depends on your group size at checkout, with groups of up to five and groups of six to ten each offered in all three languages.
