The Experience
I’ll be honest — I didn’t expect Córdoba to smell like orange blossoms. But stepping through the Moon Gate into the Jewish Quarter, that was the first thing I noticed. Our guide, Marta, waved us down a narrow street (I’m still not sure how cars even fit here) and pointed at tiny balconies dripping with flowers. She told us stories about old families and secret signs on doorways. There was this moment when an old man shuffled by with his groceries and nodded at Marta — you could tell she grew up here.
The Alcázar was partly closed for restoration (they warned us ahead), so instead we ducked into these cool stone baths — Caliph Baths, I think? The air changed as soon as we stepped inside; it was damp and echoed in a way that made everyone whisper without thinking about it. Marta explained how people used to gather here centuries ago, which made me picture all those lives layered over each other. We wandered through some palace courtyards too, sunlight flickering off tiles. I got distracted by a stray cat sunning itself on a bench.
And then came the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba. It’s hard to explain what it feels like walking into that forest of striped columns — kind of dizzying, honestly. The light is different inside, softer somehow. Marta traced her finger along one pillar and told us about twelve centuries of history packed into this one place. Someone’s phone beeped in the silence and everyone laughed nervously (except Marta — she just smiled). I still think about that quiet under those arches.
