The experience

Your driver collects you from your hotel or a place you choose in Cordoba and drives you to Medina Azahara, the 10th-century palace complex that was once the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate. A shuttle bus takes you from the parking area to the archaeological site itself, where your official guide walks you through the ruins: one of Spain's most significant historical sites. The scale of what was built and then abandoned becomes clear as you move through the remains of palaces, administrative buildings and fortifications spread across the hillside.

After Medina Azahara, you return to Cordoba for a break to eat. Once you've had lunch, the walking tour of the old city begins with your guide. The Mosque-Cathedral dominates the itinerary: a structure that shifts between Islamic and Christian architecture depending on which century you're looking at. From there, you move through the Jewish quarter, cross the Roman Bridge (which has carried traffic since the 1st century), and see the remains of the Roman Temple, the Theatre, the Mausoleum and the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs, whose gardens and courtyards still hold Mudéjar details from centuries of occupation. The mills along the Gualdaquivir and the Roman walls frame the walk.
