Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Basque Coastline and Towns

  • Walk Biarritz promenade and lighthouse
  • Visit Les Halles market for local foods
  • Tour Maison Adam patisserie in Saint Jean de Luz
  • Drive along La route de la Corniche
  • Explore Hondarribia’s medieval neighborhood
  • Travel via Mount Jaizkibel road to San Sebastián

The experience

You have a free afternoon or a morning to spare on the Basque coast, and eight hours to see three towns without renting a car or navigating between them. The tour picks you up at your hotel and moves through the 40 kilometers between Biarritz and Hondarribia as a single arc, so you do not backtrack. Biarritz itself is the entry point: you walk its promenade past the 44-meter lighthouse and the sumptuous Belle Epoque hotels that made it Europe's gateway to surfing in the 1950s, then move inland to Les Halles market to see the cheeses, charcuterie and bakeries that define French coastal life.

St Jean de Luz is a fishing village protected by a bay, and the stop there centers on the Maison Adam patisserie, where the macaron was created in 1660. The same era brought the French corsair Johannès de Suhigaraychipi through these waters. The patisserie and the history sit side by side. From there, the route follows La Corniche, an eight-kilometer road that runs between Ciboure and Hendaye along the crest and the cliffs: short enough to drive in one stretch, long enough that you will not want it to end. When it does, you have reached Hondarribia, the last city on the Spanish coast, with a river, a bay, mountains visible from the streets, and a walled medieval neighborhood at the top where the New York Times has noted the fishing district's standing in world cuisine.

The tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off, transport by air-conditioned minivan, and a driver-guide who speaks English or Spanish. All areas are wheelchair accessible, and specialized infant seats are available. Wheelchair accessibility features are extra and require advance notice. You will need to carry your passport or European Union ID. The route ends with a drive along Mount Jaizkibel toward San Sebastián, where the Basque coast opens toward Bizkaia.
