The experience

The first thing I noticed was the cool breeze coming off the Mediterranean, even though we were tucked away in the Sierra Calderona hills. Our guide (Miguel, a local climber who knows every crack and ledge) met us at a dusty trailhead just outside Náquera. He handed out harnesses and helmets, making sure everything fit right before we set off through the pine-scented forest. You could hear birds calling overhead and, honestly, my nerves kicked in a bit as we got closer to the rock face.

The climbing spot itself sits high enough that you get these wide-open views of Valencia city and the sea shimmering far off. Miguel explained how the wall faces south, so it’s warm but not too hot, even in February you can climb here without freezing your fingers. We started with some easy routes. He showed us how to tie knots and double-check each other’s gear. My hands shook at first, but after a few tries, I found myself laughing along with the others as we scrambled up short climbs. The chalk dust clung to my palms and I could smell wild rosemary crushed underfoot every time I landed back on the ground.
