The Experience

We met our skipper, Jordi, right at Port Olímpic — he was already barefoot and grinning, tossing ropes like he’d been born on this dock. My cousin tried to ask about the “golden fish” sculpture in her best Spanish (it’s called Peix d’Or), but Jordi just laughed and answered in English anyway. There was something about the way the sunlight bounced off the water that made me squint even behind my sunglasses. I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed before we’d even left the marina.

The boat — Anna Katharina — felt almost too nice for us, with soft cushions everywhere and that salty tang in the air mixing with olives and fuet on the table. As we drifted out past Barcelona’s twin towers, someone pointed out how tiny Sagrada Familia looked from here. I leaned over the side, watching jellyfish slide by under the hull. The city noise faded fast; all you could hear was wind in the sails and Jordi humming some Catalan song I couldn’t place. He handed us cold beers (or sodas if you wanted), and it hit me: this is actually what a private sailing tour in Barcelona is supposed to feel like.

We anchored maybe half an hour later — time blurs out there — and a couple of us braved a swim. The water was colder than expected but sharp in a good way; I came up gasping and laughing while my aunt snapped blurry photos. No dolphins today (Jordi said sometimes they show up), but honestly I didn’t mind. Just floating there with cava in hand, listening to distant traffic fade into nothing… I still think about that view back toward shore, all blue and white and scattered sunlight.
