The experience

You board at Moll de la Marina in Port Olímpic at whatever time works for your day. After a short safety briefing from the skipper, the moorings come loose and you're moving out past the golden fish sculpture and Barcelona's twin towers, watching the city shrink into its own skyline. The wind does the work. You settle into soft cushions on the bow or in the cockpit with a cold drink (beer, wine, cava or a soft drink), and a plate of tapas: local cheese, fuet sausage, premium olives, grapes and crackers.

The Mediterranean opens up in front of you, deep blue and still. The skipper points out how the city unfolds from ancient times to now, visible all at once from the water. Weather permitting, you'll anchor for a swim. The water is calm enough to jump in and float, and if you're lucky, moonfish, sunfish, turtles or dolphins drift past. The trip runs 1, 2, 3 or 4 hours depending on which option you chose. The skipper handles all the sailing, so there's nothing to learn or prove.

The boat carries a maximum of 12 people, which means it stays manageable even when full. Children ride free as long as they're with an adult. Infants sit on a lap. Wheelchair access runs to the boarding point and throughout the boat. The skipper speaks English, Spanish, German or Dutch, depending on your group.
