The Experience

I didn’t really know what to expect when we met our driver-guide outside the ME Barcelona hotel—just a little nervous, honestly, because I’d never been in an eco tuk tuk before. But there it was, humming quietly at the curb on Carrer de Casp. We rolled up to the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site and honestly, I thought it was just another hospital until Marc explained how it was built by Lluís Domènech i Montaner (I probably mispronounced that—I got a smile but no correction). The tiles glowed under the thin sun. Then came Sagrada Família—no matter how many photos you’ve seen, standing underneath those towers is something else. After that it all blurred together in a good way: Casa Batlló with its dragon-back roof on Passeig de Gràcia; La Pedrera’s wavy stone balconies (Marc called them “the sea frozen in rock,” which sounded poetic until he laughed and admitted he stole that line from his art teacher). We zipped past Plaça de Catalunya where pigeons scatter if you so much as blink. At Barceloneta Beach, you could smell the salt and sunscreen even though it wasn’t quite swimming weather yet. Some locals were already out with their towels anyway—nothing stops them apparently.
